First Nations Principles to Guide Future Health Legislation
In 2021-2022, the FNHC created space for First Nations in BC to dialogue with Indigenous Services Canada (or ISC) on federal distinctions-based Indigenous health legislation. During that time it became clear that BC-specific health governance arrangements do not fit within ISC’s legislative (or lawmaking) process.
In response, the FNHC arranged for new engagement throughout 2023-2027 to discuss First Nations Principles to Guide Future Health Legislation. Unlike past discussions, this considers the First Nations Health Governance Structure in BC and legal tripartite health partnership with BC and Canada.
Engagement will continue from 2024-2027, with the goal of creating a Principles document at GW 13 and Chiefs and Leaders to vote on Principles Document at GW 14 to inform both federal and provincial laws from a First Nations in BC perspective and embed community and Nation-specific priorities into the health system.
