Evolving the FNHC's Role in First Nations Health Governance Structure in BC

Through Resolution #2011-01, First Nations Chiefs and leaders in BC asked the FNHC to design a process for strategic decision-making in health governance. In response, the FNHC released the ‘Engagement and Approval Pathway’ – seen below – to gather their wisdom, input, and direction regarding important matters in this area. The Pathway is supported by reciprocal accountability and the 7 Directives. This crucial process continues to uphold strategic decision-making in health and the long-term goals, philosophies, and values of First Nations in BC.

The Engagement and Approval Pathway and dialogue leading up to Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey XIV on September 22nd to 24th, 2027 is illustrated above. As seen in the timeline figure below, during spring 2026 the FNHC-planned dialogue on ‘Evolving the FNHC’s role within the First Nations Health Governance Structure’ will center on a DRAFT Discussion Paper, which will bring results-driven focus to following key areas:

  1. Evolving the FNHC’s mandate (and functions).
  2. Evolving the FNHC’s membership and structure.
  3. Evolving the FNHC’s accountability processes.

First Nations and communities in BC are once again shaping the future of health through ongoing conversations on how to evolve the First Nations Health Governance Structure more broadly, and the FNHC more specifically. This includes sharing ideas on how to update the FNHC’s mandate and functions, membership and structure and accountability processes to respond to the changing needs of the regions, Nations, and communities within the context of Regionalization. The hope is that the upcoming engagement will lead to a Consensus Paper and Resolution for review during the 2027 Gathering Wisdom event.
